Chapter Eighteen
It had been a long time since Fenrir summoned Skerandi to his hand. Most of the time, he could handle problems with his clenched fists. When worse came to worst, he broke out the claws and teeth. But if Pan Head had been eating the flesh of gods, he'd need all the help he could muster.
Besides, he knew very well how cool it looked when he summoned Skerandi, and he'd kinda wanted to impress Hera with his little trick. It was nothing compared to what she was used to, but any advantage would help.
Help with what he wasn't sure. He was over fighting his attraction for her, that much he knew. But where did she stand? Obviously they needed to clear the air, have a discussion. Perhaps then they could move forward. He just hoped they could survive long enough to do so.
âJake,â he asked the young shifter, âcan you handle a firearm?â
âUm...no?â
âThat needs to change.â Fenrir turned to Ceto. âCould you start him off on the basics? Just like I showed you.â
Ceto nodded with a grim smile. âIâll do my best. Boy! Come here.â
Jacob looked to Fenrir, who gave a subtle nod. Then he moved over to join Ceto at the gun cabinet. It didn't take long for him to become consumed with his lesson.
Fenrir turned to Hera and jutted his chin toward the exit. âTake a walk with me?â
He led her outside, into the night air. The moon shone down on them like a silver sentinel, watching all without judgment. Fenrir fell a bit behind Hera as he closed the door to his shop. His gaze fixed on her sinuous back and the hypnotizing sway of her hips. His cock twitched in spite of the dire circumstances.
Hera glanced at him as he came abreast, a slight smile on her lips.
âWhat?â Fenrir asked when she didnât explain.
âDid you get a good look?â
âA good look at what?â
âMy ass.â
Fenrir nearly stumbled. âYouâre rather forward for a goddess.â
âYou must not have known very many goddesses? Besides, when youâve lived as long as I have, you learn to dispense with pretense. I mean, that's why you took me for a walk, isn't it? So we can figure out where to go from here?â
When they reached the tree line of the forest, Fenrir moved aside a low hanging branch for Hera. She ducked under it, and he followed behind, allowing it to spring back to its original state.
âIâm not good at talking,â Fenrir said eventually. âMaybe thatâs why I gave up being a god. I couldnât express myself to those who worshipped me.â
âI thought you were the god of wolves?â
âI wasâ¦but I had human followers as well. Humans who were wise enough to recognize the good qualities in wolf-kind.â
âAt least your followers respected you. I was either pitied or feared.â Hera hugged herself and shuddered. âIf you read the ancient stories, youâd think I was an awful being.â
âI donât think youâre awful,â Fenrir said.
She eyeballed him with cautious optimism. âYou really donât think so, do you? You might have ignored me at first and been rude, but you never cared about my past.
